dude, i know you don't care why people unfollow you, but i’m just letting you know it's because you think a shirtless chris pine among two similarly unclothed women that at least contributes to his movie characterization is “equal” to when one of the two main female characters is shown sexualized in her underwear, with movie dialogue stating lack of consent, and in a way that contributes nothing to plot or characterization all in order to appeal “to a rather large male fanbase.” just saying.

I do care when people unfollow me, but I don’t care if it’s for reasons as petty as not letting me have my own opinion.
The person who posted the comment on that “gratuitous” picture had some really, really fantastic points, points I completely agree with, and I’m going to add on a few things:

In the Star Trek (2009), Pine, who plays Kirk, is seen in only his underwear. I would agree, yes, that is good characterization on Kirk. In the second film, we see Kirk getting out of bed, shirtless. I don’t see that as characterization, especially if you see that just a few moments later, while Kirk and Spock are going to meet Pike, Kirk says to a couple women “Hi, James Kirk”. In fact, I see that as eye candy, considering Pine is an attractive guy, and the screenwriters and studio also attempting to appease the female (and some of the male) audience. I also don’t see anything wrong with them doing that.
Alice Eve’s character in the film is both a plot device and a way to introduce to a new character in the Trek universe that was rebooted in 2009. I’m not one to generally bash opinions, but if you think that the only reason she’s in the film is for eye candy, then you are an idiot. Eve is also a great actress, and I’m sure that on top of her looks, Abrams cast her because she’s a talented actress.
It’s worth noting that there is also a scene that was cut from the film which shows Cumberbatch showering. People got genuinely mad that the scene had been cut, and really wanted to see it, and I’ve not met one person who complained about Pine being shirtless in either films. But when a woman voluntarily chooses to be half naked in a film, people get mad? How is that not sexist? Women are supposed to be equal to men, but you’re not allowing it. Why can’t Eve be half naked, but it’s okay that Pine and Cumberbatch can be?
Eve’s character in the film is also incredibly smart and equal to any and all of the main characters in the film. Who’s to say it isn’t okay for her to be half naked in a fucking scene?
It’s also important to take note on how Eve, who is an Oxford-educated actress, can make her own decisions and read the script knowing at one point in the film her character would be half-naked. It’s not for someone on the internet to say that it isn’t okay for her to do what the script wants, in return, what she wants. She chose the script. In an interview she says that “ever man in the movie cries”, and that there’s “vulnerability in all humanity and that vulnerability doesn’t just belong to women”. Eve worked incredibly hard on the movie, and she was also happy that people had a chance to see it.
On that “lack of consent” in the particular scene, all I can say is.. really?

The fact that everyone is drawing attention to it is what’s making it gratuitous. Tumblr people take every single instance that’s even remotely “socially unjust” and completely warps it into something it’s not.

That and, it’s very clear, that all the people who complain about instances like this obviously don’t know how to cinematic business works. They assume that every single decision going into the movie is in the director’s hands, when ultimately, it’s the production company that has the final say what has to be in the movie. The movie industry is exactly that: an industry. Production company corporate heads are no different than ones to say, an oil company. They want money. They see what will generate the most viewers for a movie (such as sexual promiscuity) and demand it in a movie. The movie industry is an industry. Don’t blame a director for having a corporate hag breathing down their neck threatening to pull the plug at any moment.

Remember two weeks ago when Benedict Cumberbatch said that a shirtless scene with him in it was cut, and everyone bitched because they wanted to see it? How in any way shape or form is this any different? People got genuinely MAD that they couldn’t see Benedict Cumberbatch shirtless, and yet everyone is up in arms because Alice Eve got to be? If women truly are supposed to be equal to men, then there shouldn’t be any discrepancy between who’s allowed to be shirtless and who’s not.

Also, Alice Eve commented in an interview saying that she was excited to show off her body in the film. She said that she worked extremely hard for it, and was pleased to have people be able to see it.

Stop turning minuscule details that don’t even serve the main point of a project into things that they are not. By focusing on the seemingly “socially unjust” aspects of a picture, it proves that you are not grasping the true point of the film, and are in fact creating sexism and racism and any other isms by applying them to situations where they are truly not present.
