The title Mean Streets comes from a quote from Raymond Chandler “But down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid.”
Evidently, Scorsese sent the script to Corman who suggested using African American actors but director John Cassavetes had told him that he had “spent a year of his life making a piece of shit” for Corman on Boxcar Bertha.

Spectacular cinematography and acting. The whole god damn cast was perfect. Making the question stand why the fuck has Leo never won an Oscar and why hasn’t Scorsese won more!? This movie created very developed characters with a whole gruesome taste of their own. The story was classic but new and felt very much a movie with a strong taste in its mouth. I very much liked the tie in with the first draft in history and how strong of an issue it was in the movie.
I didn’t like the lack of real emotion within Leo because I know he is a far better pain actor then he was in this film but he still did splendid. I also wish there was more character with the supporting cast out side Leo, The bad guy and the love interest.
