I considered it a true cinematic challenge of working with a versatile actor such as Robert De Niro, who moulds himself according to each character. The only other actor who matches his histrionic ability is Al Pacino.

It’s a film that came from the heart, meaning that it was something of a personal project. Paul Schrader wrote it; he lived those feelings, I lived those feelings, he was able to express it in a certain way and I just became enamored of it.
